JAVIER ABELLA: ´Other Realities´
A positive photographer that views life in negative, like his works, which doesn´t mean he is not negative but he sees in the negative the positive side.
We interviewed Javier Abella, a remarkable Spanish artist originally from Madrid but settled in Barcelona. As a citizen of the world he fights like Don Quijote against the mills and finds beauty in everything he sees through his camera.
What is art? Is there anything or anyone that can define it?
If we look at a dictionary meaning about art, we could say that art is a virtue, a disposal or ability to do something.
.
Personally, I am not able to agree with this statement as we should consider art as any type of realization, giving place to a wide range that would support the idea of those who believe in art anything is acceptable. Common frases that we hear infinite times in expositions such as "my child can do that" would give validity to the ordinary dictionary meaning.
For me art is a subjective concept that with any doubt has to do with the ability to be able to create something inside the subjective. Art would be the combination of manifestated situations being able to transmit any type of emotion or feeling.
What does it mean to be an artist?
Everytime someone tries to adress to me considering me an artist, I have to say I laugh a little as going back to the subjectivity of the term, in my conception of art, artists are the ones that I look up to and are situated in a very high step hard to reach. Those who in their diverse disciplines have survived in time and have been able to create school and communicate their philosophy.
Said this, my approach as an artist is to try to share emotions, provided from a concept that makes the audience think and feel.
What is inspiration?
In a sublime state where imagination flows allowing the evolution of the creativity in any sector.
¿Do you think talent is a natural gift?
Without any doubt, artistic talent is a gift, the problem is that we are not given either the social or cultural education to consider the talent in people which sometimes does´t get to flourish. However, I can differentiate between artistic talent as a natural characteristic that important art figures have, coming from the cultivation of such talent.
I think that we can all be potentially creative and an education with the correct cultural base is fundamental to realise that the human being can be considerably talented.
Is there any type of force or place that gives you inspiration outside the idea or working order?
As Nietzsche said: " One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star".
I am lucky that I am carrying out a project in which the world has become my stage. I work with photography in negative from the camera. To be able to encounter the world from this perspective is my inexhaustible source of inspiration as I had never viewed it this way.
What do you try to represent in your most recent work?
I try to show a different version of the world and the things in general from a different perspective. Carl Jung said : " Everything depends on how we see things and not how they are in reality". My work is an invitation to redescover the cities, as shooting in negative inverts the lights and shadows, giving the image a tridimensional appearance that allows us to see magical scenery. But most importantly I try to communicate that "Even in the negative we can take out positive".
