XAVIER GONZÁLEZ
(D´ÈGARA.1980)
A painter like the early age ones, a bohemian from the end of the 19th century that has transferred to the 21st century. Someone who lives for the purpose of painting, which implies the significance from the philosophical to the metaphysical.
Something fundamental in his artistic process is fire, the base of all his work always working on wood.
Agapè interviewed Xavier González, an artist in the wide meaning of the word as adding up to painting, he also composes music and writes.
What is art? Is there anything or anyone that can define it?
With all this wording , what comes to my mind is what Nietzsche said that "God has died". It seems that he refered to the fact that everyone gave their opinions towards what they thought that could be God, and if everyone can have a say as a consequence God had died. With art and many other words the same could occur. However, just to take a position in this argument, well I consider that we could define art when while an exercise is performed inteligence, vocation and certain enthusiasm or romantic encouragement as a universal concept, they all come together. Or in my own words, I would say that I consider something is art when I sense a manifestation of the spirit in an earthly level. Well, to be more rational I shouldn´t have an idea in terms of what could be the definition of art for me, and certainly not for others.
What does it mean to be an artist?
To serve art, taking into account everything I said in respect to the first question. I don´t know, I know what it means in tought sorrow to be me and now what Rilke said comes to my mind " And this is living: not to know anything or anyone".
What is inspiration?
Probably what I don´t have right know as I am having difficulties answering these questions.. Well inspiration , in a way the term defines itself. I don´t know, I understand it as the arrival of a divided power that penetrates us to serve creation within a margin of creativity. Like Francisco Umbral said, "What is creative is not writting, but reading". Rigorously everything is creative, even the read in the re-reading process achieves new forms and simultaneously those forms in new appearence, they already where. A curious thing this of inspiration. I consider ir a concept somewhat imaginative and childish, I think I was brought up with an idea in relation to inspiration when I was a teenager.. But it is not of my interest anymore. Living is simply an inspiration, life is inspiration in itself. And everything that is not inspiration is not alive.
¿Do you think talent is a natural gift?
Yes, it is a god given characteristic. Not being born was a gift, being born is a gift and in consequence everything that comes along with being born or not is given.. everything.
Is there any type of force or place that gives you inspiration outside the idea or working order?
I go back to what I said earlier, for me inspiration is being alive, everything is inspiration. Because even not being is the inspiration of not being. In particular there isn´t aything that inspires me the most. There are some things that brighten me up or orientate me more than others. There are thins that interest me more tha others, for example, heaven interests me more than earth.
What do you try to represent in your most recent work?
There was an angel that said: " No one should shape an idea of God´s image but everyone should live for it". Well, I live withing these bondaries. What I tried to expose in my recent work is what i´ve been communicating always, I can´t say it with words because if I could I would have saved up the 13 years that I have dedicated in body and soul to painting. Then, paint is the medium with which I fight with to express a language that is worthy for itself, I am not able to answer this question in another medium but painting.
