Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza:  RAOUL DUFY

‘‘A painted landscape is not nature anyway. Art is a creation’’.

Raoul Dufy was a French Fauvist painter who lived from June 1877 – 23 March 1953. He is widely known for his colorful and decorative style that became fashionable in designs such as ceramics and textiles. During his life he also did work as a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces.

The work of Raoul Dufy has certain complexity that is many times overlooked. In the late 1920s he became known for his popular regattas and horse races scenes which led critics to refer to his art as ‘’born under the sign of pleasure’’. He truly had a preference towards the depiction of worldly and luxury leisure.

This exhibition allows the viewer to understand his undeniable hedonistic nature of his work through his lively strokes. He was a painter known due to his personal style and his constant search for new artistic styles and expressions.

Dufy was trained in the Impressionism wake, however it did not take him long to realize his embrace towards a new wave which was the Fauvist. This infused his new art with a decorative inner balance of lines and colors unrelated to reality. In this new wave we see how the artist abandons his famous vibrant color brushstrokes in order to engage into capturing light in large areas with brilliant and arbitrary colors.
